How To Design An Good Plastic Extruder Screw？

Customers usually ask how to design a good plastic extruder screw for their old machine. Previously, we explored what is a good plastic extruder screw. It encompasses the following aspects:

1. Plasticization quality

2. Yield

3. Unit consumption

It is not easy to design or select a plastic extruder screw that meets the above criteria and has excellent performance. When designing or selecting a screw, the following factors must be taken into account.

① The characteristics of the material and its geometry, size, and temperature conditions when added.

For example, PVC and PO are very different, as are pellets and powders. Therefore, it is necessary to take different screws to adapt to different materials.

② Geometry of the mouth die and heat resistance characteristics.

In the extruder working diagram, it can be seen that the geometry line of the mouth dies should closely match the screw characteristic line to achieve a satisfactory extrusion effect. Generally, a high resistance head fits a shallow depth screw groove on a homogenizing section and a low resistance head on a low resistance section. The screw groove deeper screw needs to match the homogenizing section screw.

③The structure form of the barrel and heating and cooling situation.

According to the theory of solids conveying, processing the taper and longitudinal groove on the barrel wall of the charging section and strong cooling will greatly enhance the efficiency of solids conveying. If barrel use this structural form, the design of the screw must take corresponding measures in the melting section and homogenization section. Make the melt rate, homogenization capacity, and feeding section of the conveying capacity consistent.

④ Screw speed.

Because the yield and melt rate depends largely on the screw speed, so the screw design or selection must take into account the screw speed factor.

⑤ The use of the extruder.

In order to properly choose the right screw design, we should clarify which products the screw is used for. Plastic production extruder, or as a mixer, pelletizing, or feeding. Because the design of the screw for different uses of the extruder is very different.
