Polydodecalactam, or nylon 12, is the scientific name for PA12. The raw material for polymerization is butadiene, which is made from petrochemicals. This is a semi-crystalline – crystalline thermoplastic.

PA 12 is an opaque white aliphatic polyamide with a glossy surface. It has low moisture uptake and very high chemical resistance. Similar to nylon 11, it has fewer amide groups than PA6 and PA66. This causes the Young’s Modulus to be smaller, but it is not affected by moisture from the environment. PA12 is very ductile and has high impact resistance, even at low temperatures. It also has a low coefficient of friction and high wear resistance.

Processing methods
Pre-drying the material is necessary. The process for PA12 includes injection moulding, extrusion, and blow moulding. Also, PA12 is used as a powder for selective laser sintering (SLS), a fast process, and for coating metals.
PA12 is highly effective at resisting grease, oils, fuels, hydraulic fluids, and many solvents. Other polyamides aren’t as resistant to diluted acids and bases.
In comparison to Nylon 66, PA 12 has less modulus, more elongation, less strength, less thermal distortion temperature, less hardness, and less melting point. It’s also more expensive. Nylon 12 absorbs half as much water as nylon 66. While Nylon 12 may not have as good a reputation as Nylon 66 under dry conditions, it’s much better at handling water than Nylon 66.
Applications
Among its products are automotive and industrial hoses, connectors, tanks for fuel, brake and cooling liquids, electronic connectors, aerospace hydraulic and air-conditioning hoses, and medical equipment, communications and sports equipment.
